Women In Our Lives ATC Swap

Women In Ours Lives ATC Swap
After seeing the ATCs that my daughter's and I swapped, my sisters wanted to do a swap. My oldest daughter organized and chose a theme for the swap. Each of us enjoyed creating our ATC and the results were amazing. This was relatively new to all of us. We had so much fun doing it that we have plans to continue doing a swap every three months.

Retirement

After teaching Family and Consumer Sciences for 41 years,
40 of them in the same school system, I have retired.
My retirement will reflect only 31 years because 10 of my years
were part time. This gave me the opportunity to spend time with my
two young daughters, taking walks in the afternoon, working on craft
projects, baking, reading, and playing, all irreplaceable.

Plants and flowers were a favorite gift to give and receive.

This is a college given to me by the Middle School FACS teacher where I taught.
She made it to reflect the many areas of FACS.

I was honored at a retirement dinner arranged by students and faculty.
In addition to students, faculty and staff I was joined by my husband, daughters,
son-in-law, and granddaughter to celebrate the occasion.
The dinner was planned and prepared by students with the help of faculty and
was served in the dining room attached to the food service class restaurant kitchen.

I was presented with a silver rolling pin and a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
The food service teacher who I have worked with over the years has always referred to me as "Queen of Pie Crusts".

The best part of the evening was to hear the tributes given by two of my students.
From Juliana
We've come together this evening to celebrate and share our gratitude for Mrs. H's 41 years of excellent service here at PHS. Throughout those years, she's educated generations of students in the areas of cooking, child care, fashion design, sewing, and more.
These are life skills that students will continue to use much after their college years.

Mrs. H has been very understanding of her students. When I'd come into school B period starving because I didn't have time to eat, Mrs. H would let me make breakfast for myself so I'd be prepared for the ogre (the food service teacher who was in the room and smiling) that I face in the afternoon for mini foods. He was yelling at me as I was writing the draft for this speech on a greasy napkin. She is a breath of fresh air compared to him.

She also introduced me to many new foods, including my favorite, monkey bread. Her foods classes helped me discover the passion I have for cooking which has turned into the career I'm working to pursue.

She not only has helped her students, but she has done her fair share for the community. The play school program she's organized brings toddlers together for interaction before kindergarten which is very beneficial for them. My brother participated in this and absolutely loved it.

So Mrs. H, thank you for all your wonderful service, we will miss you here at PHS.

From Patricia
A warm welcome to everyone here tonight who has come to celebrate Mrs. H's retirement. Although this is a special occasion for her, a number of us - including me- are sad to see her go.

This is my second good bye to this wonderful woman. I actually participated in her play school program when I was about four years old. Now, a few other students and I help her run the play school. I am in both her childcare and baker's dozen class this semester, but through my four years at PHS, I have taken about 6 classes with her. She's given me A's and B's, 100's, and zeros when I forgot to hand in my article summaries. But today is going to be a little different.

Today, Mrs. H, I get to grade you.

Ability to multitask, especially in bakers dozen with 18 kids running around like lunatics; A
Ability to make carrying around a sack of flour for one week seem somewhat interesting; A
And of course, the ability to always have her students best interest at heart and lending a helpful hand whenever possible; I give you an A+.

Mrs. H has been one of the best teachers I have had during my time here. I know I will miss her when I am off at college next year, and I also know that the Portland school system will never find another teacher quite like her.

I wish you all the best in your retirement. Thank you for all the help you have given me over the years.

To students, faculty and staff, I say THANK YOU!

The senior class presented me with a lovely bouquet the night of graduation.

It is with mixed feelings that I leave PHS after 40 years. There are many things I will miss and many that I won't miss. I will miss working with students and knowing that I have helped them develop life skills, and inspired some to pursue a career in one of the many facts of FACS.
I am excited that a full time replacement for me has been hired to carry on where left off.
I am looking forward to spending evenings with my husband drinking coffee and talking, without having to correct papers and make lesson plans; visiting my mother, who lives 400 miles away, whenever I want and not only during school vacations; spending more time with my beautiful daughters and granddaughters when I'm not worried about getting back to school work; being available to help whoever needs it whenever they need it; taking art workshops on school days; letting the sun melt the snow, curling up with a good book on rainy days; visiting my brothers and sisters, all eight of them and relaxing and enjoying life.

Living On The Edge

An April storm washed away the parking lot that had been on the side of this apartment building.

Treasure Box

The Princess slept over Friday night and after playing with the dogs, making mud (you know all you need is dirt and water), having a snack picnic style on a towel in the yard, kicking the ball with the neighborhood kids, taking a walk, and eating pizza, she said, "I have an idea, we can do a project". We have a craft book, Craft Projects for Princesses, which she took off the shelf and chose a treasure box as the project for the evening. I just happened to have the necessary supplies close at hand.

Wellness Weekend Arrival

For the past 6 years during Mother's Day weekend, my daughters and I have participated in a Women's Wellness Weekend sponsored by a local YMCA and held at Camp Hazen in Cheshire, CT. This year we decided that we would do something different and plan our own Wellness Weekend. My daughters, MA and CL, conspired to plan our destination and managed to keep it a secret from me. With much anticipation we prepared for the weekend, gathering supplies for our projects, working on our ATCs, listening to the weather to decide on what to bring for clothing, choosing snacks and beverages and arranging little surprises for each other. Friday afternoon arrived, the car was packed, and we headed south on route 9. Our first treat was in gift bags in the cup holders in the back seat. MA, my oldest daughter, had brewed "Sumatra" ice coffee for us and presented it in Starbucks cold cups. After much joking about going camping, as we crossed the CT/RI border, it was divulged that we were going to Providence. We had reservations for two nights at the Courtyard Marriot in downtown Providence. If we didn't all have an affinity for Providence when we arrived, I believe we did when we left

CL, my youngest daughter, wrote out an itnerary for us so we would be able to accomplish our planned activities.

We arrived at our destination around 6:00 P.M. and settled into our room.
We exchanged Mother's Day gifts and the ATCs we made to commemorate the weekend.

The ATC's (Artist Trading Cards) were made by CL, left; HM, center; and MA, right.

After unpacking, it was time to scout out a place for dinner. We took a walk and after considering our options decided on "The Melting Pot", a fondue restaurant. We started with the cheddar cheese fondue made at the table with beer, garlic, cheddar and swiss cheese and served with a variety of bread andveggies, and apples. We then enjoyed a salad after which indulged in batter dipped teriaki sirloin, shrimp, and veggies. At this point, we decided that we would have to go back the next night for dessert.

Our plan for the week end was to have each of us plan a 2 hour workshop for the three of us.
We tried to keep the workshops a surprise, but through a series of events, ended up learning what the others had planned.

After a breakfast at Starbucks and a walk along the canal, cut short by thunder and lightening we returned to our hotel for our first workshop. Our first featured artist was CL who presented a workshop on "Dream Boxes".

We had some liquid refreshment chilling for our break.
We worked on collages to place in our Dream Boxes and learned to make transparencies using packing tape. A surprisingly simple yet very effective technique for putting a bug in a jar.
We all enjoyed working on the Dream Boxes and were pleased with our results.

Wellness Weekend Break for Lunch

Not wanting to brave the inclement weather we opted for room service for lunch.
We had a spectacular view from our window of the city amid gray, overcast skies.

A view from the hallway outside of our room.

After lunch, it was my turn to be the featured artist. My project was "Spoon Poetry" as featured in an article by Kelli Perkins in the May/June 2008 issue of "Cloth, Paper Scissors". I brought a selection of silver spoons with holes drilled, old books, alcohol inks, and gel medium.

MA is deep in thought selecting the words for her spoon poem.

The "Vicor of Wakefield", a gift from her sister, was her chosen book for selecting her words. This was especially appropriate since MA is an extreme Tim Wakefield fan.

Our spoons were colored with alchol inks and then the words were glued on with gel medium. Both sides of the spoons were then coated with gel medium.

Wellness Weekend Out To Dinner

The rain subsided, the sun came out, a cold front blew in, and it was off to eat dinner.
We decided on Re Rah, an Irish pub for dinner.
MA and CL stopped to pet a lion.

Wellness Weekend Featured Artist - MA

After dinner it was MA's turn to to present her workshop.
MA's featured project was "Envelope Books".
She designed a template that we used to cut our envelopes out of decorative papers.
We then folded and glued to create our envelopes. Strips of card stock was added for binding.
We created our covers and the assembled our books with metal rings.

CL is intent on getting the hole punched in "approximately" the right place.
MA is showing CL just how wide the card stock needs to be.
MA is sizing the cover to fit the pages of my book.

MA spent so much time instructing and helping CL and me that she didn't have much time to work on her own book so there are no pictures to show.
